The first is the frequency of when Storage Sense runs, which is set with a drop-down menu labeled “Run Storage Sense.” You can set it to run every day, week, or month-or whenever disk space is low. In the “Storage Sense” options, you’ll want to take note of a few different settings. Then under that, click “Configure Storage Sense or run it now.” Click the sliding switch located just below to set it to the “On” position. In Settings, click the “System” icon and then click “Storage.”Īt the top of the Storage options, you’ll see a small paragraph of text about Storage Sense. You can also press Windows+I to open Settings quickly. Here’s how to set it up.įirst, launch “Settings” by opening the “Start Menu” and clicking the “gear” icon on the left. Once it’s time to empty the bin, you can double-click the shortcut, right-click the recycle bin in the window that pops up, and click “Empty Recycle Bin.Using a built-in feature called Storage Sense, you can save disk space by configuring Windows 10 to delete files of a certain age located in your Recycle Bin automatically every day, week, or month. You can still drag items into it like the normal bin, however. It’s not quite the same as the default one, as you can’t see it fill up when you add items to it, and you can’t empty it by right-clicking the shortcut.
You’ll have a new Recycle Bin on the desktop.
Right-click the Recycle Bin, hover over “Send To,” and click “Desktop (create shortcut).” Go back to File Explorer, and click on “This PC” on the left of the bar, then go into the “C:” You’ll find right at the top a file called “$Recycle.Bin.” Go into this folder, and you should see the Recycle Bin there.ħ. Windows will give us a warning not to delete anything important, but that’s okay we won’t be deleting anything.Ħ. Also, find “Hide protected operating system files” and uncheck this. In the scroll box at the bottom find the category “Hidden files and folders.” Underneath that, tick the round circle next to “Show hidden files, folders, and drives.” This allows us to see areas that Windows hides from us by default, which includes the Recycle Bin folder.ĥ. In the window that opens, click the “View” tab.Ĥ. At the top click “View.” In the ribbon that pops open, click the “Options” button on the far-right.ģ. It doesn’t matter where File Explorer is when it opens we just want the window itself for now.
